Happy Earth Day, although every day I’d earth day. This year Earth Day’s theme js "Planet vs. Plastics.” With COVID, the single-use plastic movement took many steps backwards due to more take out and not being allowed to bring your own refillable coffee mug to cafes, etc. It is time to make sure we keep moving forward with decreasing the production and our use of single-use plastics - or anything that is single-use ultimately. I see a lot of restaurants and bars putting straws into drinks automatically again, without asking. The “new” options for straws such as the agave straw are better than 100% plastic but they still have almost 65% plastic in them. That plastic breaks down quicker than the type used in traditional straws but it is still single-use plastic that goes into our landfills. The “compostable” straws are only compostable unless they get into an industrial compost, which 99% don’t.
